Historically camels were relied upon for trade and food and today are still enormously respected in the United Arab Emirites.
During a stay at the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort, we booked a Sunrise Camel Trek for an unforgettable journey across the Liwi Desert with the hope of capturing the true essence of Arabia.
The thought of rising at 5am obviously didn’t appeal to many as we were the only ones on the tour. Setting off in the dark with our driver/guide we quickly verged off the main driveway onto a sand track and started our trek across the desert.
Peering through the window at the sheer vastness of open space around us, it was hard to comprehend where our camels could perceivable be in this dark and isolated setting. Thoroughly enjoying the mystical journey through the sand dunes, which stretched as far as the eye could see, we traversed from the top of a high dune and there in the distance you could just about make out two camels with an immaculately dressed tribesman..
Beautifully adorned with muzzle and matching coloured blanket, these camels were obviously well cared for and happy looking.
Using a stool to climb onto my camel I was pleasantly surprised how easy the mount was considering that I had never riden a camel before. The tribesman led the first camel by hand and our driver walked alongside our procession regaling interesting facts and history about the camels, local tribesman, the desert and the area in general. He was a great storyteller with a wicked sense of humour which made for a fascinating hour.
We stopped as the time for sunrise was approaching and sitting atop of these magnificent animals, we watched the first signs of sun igniting the sand to an orange hue, as it rose on the horizon.
What a magical sight to behold and treasure. Such a stunning vision in complete isolation and peacefulness.
We watched as sunrise came and went and then made our way back to the jeep, walked up a medium sized sand dune and had a 20 minute stop for refreshments laid out in an Arabian setting. Hot chocolate and an extremely welcome ham roll to finish a perfect morning which is highly recommended.
