burj al arab dubai

Regarded as a 7 star Hotel, you need deep pockets to stay overnight or indeed dine at this hotel. In fact you cannot get past lobby security without proof of a restaurant reservation if you are not a guest.

The interior is in my humble opinion quite garish with bright colours, a baroque style and an overdose of gold-leaf application. It’s certainly one of the places to go in Dubai to view extreme extravagance!

However, the charm lies in the hotel’s exterior, with it’s graceful structure, designed to resemble the sail of a ship.

The hotel sits effortlessly and gracefully on an artificial island, connected to the mainland via a private bridge. Looking for romantic things to do for couples in Dubai?

Head to one of the ocean front beaches in time for sunset and watch in awe as the sun sets over this beautiful building.

Al Fahidi Historical District Dubai

The Bastakia Quarter as it was once known, dates back to the early 1900’s when it was built by Persian merchants.

Today it is a wonderful place to wander, down the labyrinth of narrow maze-like lanes recognizable by its iconic wind towers, the original source of air conditioning.

You will feel a sense of calm at the quietness as you stroll aimlessly amid the sand-coloured buildings, many of which now house small museums, cafes and art galleries.

Be sure to look out for the short section of the old city wall which dates back to 1800.

Dubai Creek

The saltwater creek originally divided the city into Deira and Bur Dubai and was once the place where pearl boats docked before setting off to discover new jewels.

Today, brightly coloured dhows dock while sailors load and unload their wares, while tourists and locals alike are transported across the Creek in traditional boats called abras. It is a hive of activity and a great place to people watch.

21. ENJOY A SOJOURN WITH FLAMINGOS

ras-al-khor-dubai

Cool things to do in Dubai include visiting Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. These wetlands are home for for around 180 different bird species. Visit early in the morning before feeding and watch the beautiful flamingos up close.

  • Location: Ras Al Khor Road & Dubai-Al Ain Road
  • Open: Winter (Oct-March) 7.30am-5.30pm / Summer (Apr-Sept) 6am-6pm. Times differ during Ramadan | Best way to get here is by car.

22. STROLL ALONG THE DUBAI MARINA WALKWAY

Dubai Marina Walk

Walk along 7 km of walkways overlooking beautiful Dubai Marina, shop, dine and enjoy the picturesque views. We think its one of the “must do” things in Dubai for visitors.

You will pass several “landmarks” along the tree-lined path. Start the walk in the late afternoon to witness the spectacle of the surrounding skyscrapers twinkling as they light up in the night sky.

I suggest starting the walk at Dubai Marina Mall and ending at The Beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence but you can walk any distance you like depending on the weather.

  • Location: Dubai Marina | Open: Anytime but afternoon & early evening is best and will be cooler
  • Nearest Metro / Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station

City Walk in Jumeirah has been transformed into a colourful outdoor art gallery by renowned street artists representing five continents, each showcasing their own individual signature art style.

Riverland Dubai is the only themed, free thing to do in Dubai Parks and Resorts. You can discover four theme-based districts or zones, which transport you to days gone by, in beautiful recreations. Choose between the French Village, Boardwalk, The Peninsula and India Gate.

So take a stroll along the river and be transported through time.

  • Location: Sheikh Zayed Road
  • Open: Sunday to Saturday 11am-7.30pm

So we have covered the best free places to visit in Dubai, but there are also some great cheap things to do in Dubai. These are worthy of their small charge and include one of the most famous things in Dubai that is unmissable.

Let’s continue with a list of some of the cheapest things to do in Dubai!

25. CROSS DUBAI CREEK ON A TRADITIONAL ABRA

traditional wooden Abra in Dubai Creek

Rated as one of the top things to do at Dubai Creek, is to take a water taxi between Deira and Bur Duba. And at just AED 1 it’s no wonder that it is one of the most popular Dubai things to do.

A lively spot, crossings are every few minutes and one of the most affordable yet authentic experiences in the city. You will find the Spice & Gold Souks on Deira side. Enjoy great views of Old Dubai during the crossing, including traditional houses, wind towers and minarets.

  • Location: The main Abra stations are at Dubai’s Old Souq and the Dubai Gold Souq.
  • Check the website for more information.

26. BURJ KHALIFA

Burj Khalifa Dubai

One of the TOP things to do in Dubai is ascend iconic Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building and one of Dubai’s top attractions. This iconic feat of engineering should be on every visitors wish list.

  • Location: 1 Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai

27. TOUR JUMEIRAH MOSQUE

jumeirah mosque dubai

Dubai’s only Mosque open to non-Muslims, Jumeirah Mosque is an architecture wonder. Whilst it is free to admire the building’s white stone exterior, we recommend paying AED 35 for an inside tour.

Whilst there are plenty of things to do in Dubai for free, there are also attractions worth paying to visit.

  • Location: Jumeirah Beach Road, Jumeirah 1 | Cost: AED 35
  • Tours: Daily except Friday begin at 10am, so get there for 9.30am and enjoy sampling the free traditional Arabic snacks

  1. Hi,
I worked in Dubai in the wave shaped hotel onshore with a view of the sale shaped one offshore, what an office (in fact I very nearly got the opportunity to inspect the systems in the offshore one but it was cancelled).
Dubai is a beautiful place in more ways than one, as well as sunshine the culture grew on me also (even though I was there to work. 10 weeks).
The souks are absolutely heaving with gold, I once saw on show in a gold shop window a sculpture of three horses, one in the centre on its hind legs and one either side with a huge base, it must have been 3 to 4 feet tall and as wide and was solid gold, I was told if you need to ask the price you can’t afford it, I could have retired on a horses tail.
I do urge anyone with a hankering to visit Dubai to do it if at all possible, driving there is an experience to be sampled but strap in tight.
There is also a lot to do without spending a fortune, a drive to the desert costs nothing yet so awe inspiring, to be so small in a place so large.
    I could go on.
    Colin
