Reflections at Keppel Bay, is one of the best spots in Singapore for views of innovative award-winning architectural projects. The high-rise undulating towers of the residential development are stunning.

2. PINNACLE@DUXTON

 

For a view of the city centre from the 50th storey, visit the Pinnacle@Duxton. This Singapore hidden gem offers interesting views for photography buffs.

You will be amazed at the 50 storey public housing development. It features the world’s two longest sky gardens, with stunning panoramic cityscape views.

Sky bridges link the buildings at the 26th and 50th floors, forming a sky garden and jogging track.

TO VISIT PINNACLE@DUXTON | Take the East-West Line (Green) and alight at Outram Park MRT. Head southwest on New Bridge Road towards Bukit Pasoh Road before turning left onto cantonment Road. (About 5 minute walk)

3. TIONG BAHRU

Tiong Bahru, steeped in history, is one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods. It’s transformation from a swamp, dates back to the 1930’s.

Take time to wander the roads and admire the Art Deco architecture of the 1930’s residential blocks. The preserved buildings from the old days now mix comfortably with hip new eateries.

Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre is an ideal spot to enjoy an authentic meal amongst locals.

Singapore tourist spots of Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India are popular. However, Tiong Bahru is a unique place in Singapore. Be sure to check out the Qi Tian Gong Temple which is over nine decades old.

TO VISIT TIONG BAHU | Take the East-West Line (Green) alighting at Tiong Bahru MRT. Either follow the Heritage Trail from the Market or wander the streets under your own speed.

4. BATTLE BOX MUSEUM, FORT CANNING PARK

 

Tucked away in Fort Canning Park, is a delightful museum definitely worthy of a visit. The Battlebox served as a hidden British underground command centre, during World War II.

It was here, that the British came to the decision to surrender Singapore to invading Japanese forces, on the 15th February 1942.

5. MINT MUSEUM OF TOYS

6. SINGAPORE MUSICAL BOX MUSEUM

 

Looking for a unique place to go in Singapore? With offerings to delight both young and old alike, Singapore musical box Museum is a little gem.

Discover the development of musical boxes, from the inner workings of the first boxes to the more advanced multi-instrumental larger boxes.

There are over 40 antique musical boxes for you to peruse. The technology and craftsmanship of the past is quite marvelous.

7. PARKVIEW MUSEUM

 

Located in Gothic-styled Parkview Square, this contemporary art museum is one of Singapore’s hidden gems.

The private gallery houses the largest Salvador Dali collection outside of Spain. With ceiling heights up to six metres, contemporary art from across Asia and Europe are showcased at their best.

Exhibitions featuring pieces from the museum’s vast collection alternate with thematic exhibitions involving international and local artists. This is a great place to chill in Singapore if you are a contemporary art fan.

Architecturally the building has some amazing Art Deco features and sculptures. Explore them in peace, as this is not a common tourist spot in Singapore.

Kusu Island offers pristine lagoons, beaches, three shrines and a Chinese Temple. Be sure to say hello to the cute tortoises in the nearby tortoise sanctuary.

Just within a short ferry ride, is the island of St John, offering peace, tranquility and a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city.

TO VISIT THE SOUTHERN ISLANDS | Take the East-West Line (Green) to Raffles Place MRT. Change to the North-South Line (Red) and alight at Marina South Pier.

9. PULAU UBIN ISLAND

 

Take a 10-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to this 1,020-hectare island. You will be transported back in time to the 1960’s, with old-school village houses on stilts, gravel roads and abundant wildlife.

Follow the Tree Trail boardwalk for 40 minutes to Chek Jawa Wetlands, the jewel of this rustic charm island.

The 100-hectare wetlands, only uncovered in 2000, is teeming with birdlife, plants, fauna and wildlife. Get a great view over the area by climbing the 20 metre tall Jejawi Tower. Keep your eyes peeled for Collared Kingfsher, Straw-Headed Bulbul and even monkeys.

Be sure to stroll around the four-zoned Therapeutic Garden, located near the pond gardens, followed by a coffee!

11. HENDERSON WAVES AND SOUTHERN RIDGES

 

The Henderson Waves Bridge mimics the undulating shape of a wave, twisting and curving along its entire 274-metre length. It’s a great place to visit in Singapore for savvy design.

Constructed from Balau wood, it the bridge is a lovely place to hang out. Enjoy the panoramic views from this unique vantage point.

The best way to explore Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge, is along the Southern Ridges walk. The 5-kilometre trail passes through Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Hort Park, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Reserve.

Visit the Southern Ridges / The Southern Ridges Walk can be accessed at numerous points, the most common options are:

  • Kent Ridge MRT station (Circle Line), Exit B. Turn left as you come out of the station and follow Science Park Drive eastwards to access Kent Ridge Park by the lake.
  • HarbourFront MRT (North-East Line), Exit D, for the start point of the Marang Trail to Mount Faber Park.

12. SUNGEI BULOH WETLAND RESERVE

Trek through some of the world’s rarest mangroves at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, in north-east Singapore.

Walk along the boardwalks of the 87-hectare wetland reserve as you explore natural habitats of crabs, mud lobsters and monkeys.

Observation posts dotted around the park, help you glimpse migratory birds, fauna and flora. This park is an underrated place in Singapore as its off the beaten track for most tourists.

Take your time exploring and you will see some beautiful and natural sights.

13. JOO CHIAT

 

Named after a wealthy Chinese Landowner, this neighbourhood is a real hidden gem for visitors. Explore on foot, the colourful two-storey shophouses, adorned with intricate tiles and facades.

A great place to check out, is The Intan, a Peranakan house and museum. Here, you will discover authentic family art and antiques, passed down through generations.

Visits to The Intan are by appointment only.

14. HOUSE OF TAN TENG NIAH

This is a wonderful area to stroll around and see one of the last Chinese villas left in Little India. Built in 1900 as a present for his wife, local businessman Tan Teng also owned confectionery factories and a rubber smokehouse in the area.

The original appearance was somewhat more muted as it appears today. With whitewashed walls and a green roof, the building was renovated back in the 80’s. The local community have since added it’s spectrum of fluorescent colours, which are quite dazzling.

As the property is currently leased out for commercial use, you cannot look inside. Instead admire the happy colours with a photo or too.

15. ISTANA

 

Open to visitors 5 times a year, the Istana is the office of the President, and working office of the Prime Minister of Singapore.

Wander through the immaculate terraced gardens and tour selected function rooms in the Istana Main Building. It certainly is one of the most beautiful places in Singapore to visit.

The Neoclassical home is grand in stature, built between 1867 and 1869 by the British and was an imposing Government House. Think stunning architectural mouldings and imposing romantic chandeliers.

This 1862 Victorian revivalist building, re-opened in 2014 after a renovation that saw improved acoustics and facilities. The architectural grandeur is intact, and home to Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

One of the famous places to visit in Singapore for music lovers, the building is also home to a hidden gem.

The Heritage Gallery on the 3rd floor, showcases the history of both the theatre and concert hall. The building, stunning in design, has a rich legacy and history dating back to 1862. The gallery has 7 sections in chronological order, packed with old photos of past performances and interesting facts.

17. KAMPONG LORONG BUANGKOK

 

Take a trip to one of mainland Singapore’s oldest kampongs, which sits in the middle of new developments. This 1950’s rustic village offers a slice of life before air-conditioned malls and high-rise buildings became the norm.

A number of families populate the sleepy village with brightly coloured houses and zinc roofs. Chickens freely roam, electrical lines are exposed and children play in the street.

If you are looking for places to go in Singapore to see “authentic Singapore”, then this ticks the boxes.

Just be mindful that this is a residential area and peoples homes.

18. GRAND SIONG LIM TEMPLE

This Buddhist Temple, also known as Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery, was completed in 1907. Crossing over a bridge, a decorated framed gateway, leads to a lovely courtyard.

Carvings adorn a seven-storey pagoda, to your right. Head inside the complex to the three main halls. The most spectacular to view, is Mahavira Hall with beautiful carvings. Then head outside to the serenity of the courtyards and the stunning bonsai.

19. HAJJAH FATIMAH MOSQUE

 

Designed by a Englishman and built in 1846, the style is a mix of Malay, Chinese and European architecture. There is plenty to note about the design, including an onion shaped dome, Chinese glazed porcelain tiles, lancet-shaped doorways and stained glass features.

However, the minaret gets most gasps from visitors, due to it leaning about 6 degrees off centre. The minaret stands on a sandy foundation, and though any further tilting has been stopped, the inclination is still apparent.

20. MAKE A NEW FURRY FRIEND AT THE CAT CAFE

21. HIGH TEA AT THE FULLERTON HOTEL

 

Looking for somewhere to enjoy afternoon tea other than at Raffles Hotel? The Fullerton Hotel has a sumptuous feel as soon as you enter the lobby. Sit in the sunlit atrium lobby being entertained by a performing harpist, whilst eating a delightful array of savories and sweets.

Straddling both sides of this famous shopping road, is Orchard Gateway. If the walkway isn’t architecturally appealing in itself, with it’s glass tubular bridge, the mall’s 3rd and 4th levels which get your interest.

Here, you will find a fabulous public library that will keep bookworms smiling for some time. Browse the books, sitting on wave-like shelves, then head over the road to discover the wonderful neighbourhood of Emerald Hill.

26. SMITH MARINE FLOATING KELONG RESTAURANT

 

For fresh seafood and a unique place to dine in Singapore, head to Smith Marine Floating Restaurant.

Not a common tourist spot in Singapore, this hidden gem is a simple 10-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal. The modern kelong floats in the middle of the sea next to Pulau Ubin.

Catch your fish from the pond and it will be cooked and served up to you to enjoy. It offers an interesting and fun place in Singapore to enjoy the freshest catch of the day.
