Dubai And Abu Dhabi Itinerary For First Timers

Are you considering a visit to the United Arab Emirates? Our Dubai and Abu Dhabi Itinerary for first timers is just what you need.

Why not sample the best of both worlds and combine Dubai and Abu Dhabi in a 7 day Trip.

DUBAI & ABU DHABI ITINERARY FOR PERFECT 7 DAYS

Of the 7 emirates which make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is arguably the most visited by tourists.

The glossy, ultramodern and futuristic facade of Dubai is in stark contradiction to it’s atmospheric Old Town. In this quarter, you will get a glimpse of a bygone era in Dubai’s history.

Yet within 2 hours drive south of Dubai, lies another of the 7 emirates, and capital, Abu Dhabi.

Here, is a perfect match for Dubai in terms of palatial accommodation, golden sandy beaches, stunning architecture and thrill seeking activities to lure visitors.

The following is an Independent Itinerary, as this country is extremely safe and easy to navigate on your own terms.

Use the Contents Menu to scroll up and down for quick reference, and be sure to save the post to Pinterest, to have as a handy guide!

Dubai Creek historically divided the city into Bur Dubai and Deira. It hails as one of the oldest historical districts, dating back to the early 1900’s, when Dubai’s economy lay in fish and pearl diving.

Deira, located on the Eastern side of the creek, is your starting point.

DAY 1 – Sights Covered

  • Gold, Perfume & Spice Souks (1 hr)
  • Bur Dubai Textile Souk (1 hr)
  • Al Fahidi Fort & Dubai Museum (1-2 hrs)
  • Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (1-2 hrs)
  • Heritage & Diving Village (1-2 hrs)

Gold, Perfume & Spice Souks

Alight at Al Ras Metro Station and walk to the Gold Souk, one of Dubai’s most visited souks.

Covered walkways hide a warren of retailers offering gold, silver, diamonds and precious metals for purchase.

It is fascinating to wander and watch as opposed to buying, but if you do want to buy, barter, barter!

Next stop just east along Sikkat Al Khail Street is the Perfume souk. Here, beautiful decorative bottles hold strong arabic perfumes, that smell divine.

Lastly, to another famous spot, the Spice Souk, where your senses will be in for a huge treat.

Array Of Spices

Colourful sacks emit pungent aromas from every herb and spice you could imagine. Keep an eye, (or nose!) out for saffron, cardamon and cinnamon.

Walk to the Deira Old Souk Abra Station.

Bur Dubai Textile Souk

Board a traditional wooden Abra to cross the creek from Deira to Bur Dubai on the western side of the creek.

Pay the man 1 AED, sit back and enjoy the view and the breeze!

Wander through the textile souk with its endless fabrics. It can get extremely hot here but it is a fun way to spend half an hour.

Be fully prepared to barter hard and just walk away if you are not interested in buying.

From here walk past Dubai Grand Mosque with it’s striking minaret (Not open to Non-Muslims) to your next stop.

Dubai Museum & Al Fahidi Fort

At Dubai Museum “Al fahidi Fort”, you will gain a fuller understanding of Dubai’s history and culture. You are acquainted with life in old Dubai, through a series of “wings”.

Various sections include a 1950’s market, a traditional home, antique pottery/weapons and a tour of shipbuilding and pearl diving profession.

In the centre of Fahidi Fort, lies a spacious yard displaying models of local boats and bamboo houses with their traditional furniture.

The fountain was designed by the same company responsible for the Bellagio Hotel Lake Fountains in Las Vegas.

High pressure jets shoot water up to 500 ft into the air, making it appear to dance in time to the music.

This spectacle is superbly choreographed to a range of music from classical to contemporary.

Cross the bridge over Burj Lake and be transported to an ancient Arabic setting.

Souk Al Bahar

High archways guide you around small shops selling fashions, art, souvenirs, carpets and more.

DAY 7 – Sights Covered

  • Sunrise Camel Trek

It is an early start this morning to travel into the desert. You will meet your camels and watch the sun rising over the golden never ending sand dunes.

Sunrise Camel Trek

Historically, camels were relied upon for trade and food. Today, they are still enormously respected in the United Arab Emirates.

A Review Of Our Own Trek Experience

The thought of rising at 5am obviously didn’t appeal to many, as we were the only ones on the tour.

Setting off in the dark with our driver/guide we quickly verged off the main driveway. Joining a sand track, we started our trek across the desert.

The sheer vastness of open space around us, was astounding. It was hard to comprehend where our camels could perceivable be, in this dark and isolated setting.

The mystical journey through sand dunes, which stretched as far as the eye could see, was incredible.

We traversed from the top of a high dune, and there in the distance was why we were here.

You could just about make out two camels with an immaculately dressed tribesman.

Beautifully adorned with muzzle and matching coloured blanket, these camels were obviously well cared for and happy looking.

THE TREK

Using a stool to climb onto my camel I was surprised how easy the mount was, considering that I had never ridden a camel before.

dubai-and-abu-dhabi-itinerary

The tribesman led the first camel by hand and our driver walked alongside our procession. He regaled interesting facts and history about the camels, local tribesman, the desert and the area in general.

He was a great storyteller with a wicked sense of humor which made for a fascinating hour.

THE SUNRISE

As the time for sunrise was approaching, sitting atop of these magnificent animals, we waited in anticipation.

sunrise-in-desert-dubai

We watched the first signs of sun igniting the sand to an orange hue, as it rose on the horizon.

camel-ride-dubai

What a magical sight to behold and treasure. Such a stunning vision in complete isolation and peacefulness.

dubai-ride-on-camel

We watched as sunrise came and went and then made our way back to the jeep.

Walking up a medium sized sand dune, we enjoyed refreshments laid out in an Arabian setting. Hot chocolate and an extremely welcome ham roll to finish a perfect morning!

After your camel trek, start your return journey back towards Abu Dhabi. Stop for lunch before continuing back to Dubai, depending upon the time of your flight.

  1. Good one Angela! I have done my booking for UAE holidays this Christmas for 6 days. I will try to cover as much as you have mentioned here. Not sure how crowdy and expensive it will be. Share some more related budget free options if we can cover.

    Reply
    • Hi, how much you spend really depends on currency conversion, your type of accommodation, tours taken and eating out. There are certainly ways to keep to a budget with type of hotel, doing a lot of free activities and eating outside of hotel restaurants. Oh and not drinking much alcohol. Hope this helps as I can’t recall exactly how much we spent but I always make whatever my budget is, spread as far as possible. Cheers
