2 | ADMIRE ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY AT THE ALBERT DOCK

 

There is no better place to understand Liverpool’s rich industrial and seafaring history, than here at the Royal Albert Dock. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the large collection of industrial buildings date back to 1846.

The complex of warehouses and docks were the first structures in Britain, to be constructed from brick, stone and cast iron, with no wood. Thus it became the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.

With its long history and revolutionary hydraulic crane, it is an interesting place to stroll around. The warehouses comprise the UK’s largest single collection of Grade I listed buildings.

3 | TAKE A RIDE ON THE HISTORIC MERSEY FERRY

 

A must do activity in Liverpool, is to jump aboard the ferry and enjoy incredible views of the city. Learn about the fascinating history of the River Mersey, which was used for transporting goods and as a gateway for slave trade.

Today, the Mersey is frequented by cruise liners, ferries, pleasure boats and merchant shipping. The Tall Ships Fleet visited in 2008 and 2012. To celebrate Cunard’s 175th anniversary in 2015, the world’s largest and grandest ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2, was joined for the first time ever on the River, by her sister ships, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.

4 | PIER HEAD & THE THREE GRACES

 

The first ever commercial wet dock was completed in 1715, and accommodated up to 100 ships. By the late 19th century, Liverpool was a thriving port, with 40% of the world’s trade passing through.

The White Star Line and Cunard where based at the Pier Head, operating cruise ships all over the world. Liverpool is also the registered port of RMS Titanic.

During this wealthy period in the city’s history, a number of beautiful architectural buidings were erected. Across from the Pier Head, you will find the Three Graces; The Royal Liver Building, The Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building.

These iconic buildings define the city skyline today, as they have for nearly a century.

5 | VIEW INSIDE THE ICONIC ROYAL LIVER BUILDING

 

One of the newest things to do in Liverpool, is to take a tour of the famous Royal Liver Building. Liverpool is a city of fine architecture, and this building is one of the city’s landmarks.

Completed in 1911, this Grade I listed beauty, helped Liverpool secure its UNESCO World Heritage Status. Designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas, it is built using reinforced concrete.

Its exterior design features two clock towers, upon which perch two liver birds, who welcome you to their great city. One looks towards the city, while the other looks over the River Mersey.

Its modern interior is light and airy with an open-plan design. It was originally built for an insurance Company and is now office space.

8 | ADMIRE BEAUTIFUL 18TH CENTURY LIVERPOOL TOWN HALL

 

This stunning Grade I listed Town Hall was constructed in 1749 and is a Georgian architectural masterpiece. It is indeed, one of the finest surviving town halls of the 18th century.

Take a guided tour and discover the beautiful interior, and the history of the Hall, designed by John Wood.

From the sweeping staircase, paneled walls, decorative sculptural dome, statues of lions and unicorns, each room is as impressive as the last.

9| TAKE A TOUR OF LIVERPOOL ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL

 

Completed in 1978, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is the largest church in Britain and a fine example of neo-gothic design. It’s one of the best things to do in Liverpool, if you like stunning architecture.

Simply magnificent both inside and out, the stained-glass windows are stunning, and the Gothic arches, high and wide. Check out the organ, artwork, bell ringing, and unparalleled city views from the tower.

When you visit Liverpool, there are plenty of places of interest to explore. But if you want great city views, head up to the observation deck of the Radio City Tower. Standing 138 metres tall, you are rewarded with 360-degree views.

11 | FIND A SECRET GARDEN AT BLUECOAT CHAMBERS

 

Right in the heart of the city, is this beautiful 300 year old, Grade I listed building. Bluecoat is the city’s centre for the contemporary arts. On offer, is a great programme of art, literature, music and family activities year-round

Head out to the delightful rear garden for some solitude while you enjoy tea and cake from the cafe. Here, and in the surrounding front courtyard, independent retailers sell hand-made gifts.

12 | BE WOWED AT ST GEORGES HALL

 

The city of Liverpool has some beautiful buildings, and this Grade I listed Hall is a real gem. Completed in 1854, this architectural delight is unmissable. Rightly regarded as one of the finest neoclassical building in the world, the interior is stunning.

Built originally as both a music hall and law courts, today it serves as a popular concert hall. You can view the court rooms, prison, Great Hall and Concert Room.

The Great Hall has provided the setting for the likes of Peaky Blinders, with its stunning backdrop.

13 |STROLL AROUND A BOMBED OUT CHURCH

 

St Luke’s Church, is Liverpool’s last bomb-site, from the May Blitz in 1941. Known by locals as the Bombed Out Church, it has no roof. Since 2007, it has operated as a managed ruin, for free events in the city.

Check out the numerous free events held year-round, wander around and enjoy the gardens.

14 | POP INSIDE A WIGWAM AT LIVERPOOL’S METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

 

A stroll up Mount Pleasant, will take you to Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, the city’s second Cathedral, known by locals as Paddy’s Wigwam.

Consecrated in 1967, it is the largest catholic cathedral in Britain. Much more modern in style and structure, than its counterpart, it is more impressive inside.

Its striking circular design, ensures that every member of the congregation can see the altar.

A visit here is both thought provoking and informative. Hearing the horror stories of conditions endured on slave ships across the Atlantic, is hard. The details are laid out in an uncompromising way, looking at the aspects of both historical and contemporary slavery.

16 | STUDY RARE ARCHIVES AT CENTRAL LIBRARY

 

A unique thing to do in Liverpool, is to wander around historic Central Library. The buildings architecture dates back to 1860, and marries old and new superbly.

Check out the collections of rare books, from the 13th century, in the magnificent Hornby Library. Then soak in the beauty of the Picton Reading Room, one of the most impressive in the world.

You really cannot miss the central staircase leading to the top of the building and great city views.

17 | UNCOVER A MASTERPIECE AT WALKER ART GALLERY

 

The Walker Art Gallery is one of Liverpool’s famous places for impressive art collections. Housing one of England’s largest art collections, you can view pieces from the 13th century to present day.

One of Liverpool’s top 10 attractions, this excellent museum is packed with impressive exhibits. Titanic was registered in Liverpool, and carried the city’s name on her stern.

Liverpool’s great port and its seafaring history is the main theme. But throw in ship models, archive sections, maritime paintings and you will be won over.

19 | ENJOY A SHOW AT THE EMPIRE THEATRE

 

Located on Lime Street, Empire Theatre has hosted many big-name touring productions, musicals and concerts over the last 125 years. With names like Frank Sinatra and Julie Andrews treading the boards here, you can see why its just as popular today.

The Empire has one of the largest two-tier auditoriums in Britain. While not modern with comfy seats, the interior is quirky and symbolic with the era it was built.

Are you looking for family things to do in Liverpool? A stop at World Museum ticks all the boxes, and your visit here is free. The building itself, on William Brown Street, has seen many renovations since opening in 1851.

A true local delicacy, beloved by scousers, an affectionate name for Liverpudlians!

The name comes from Lobscouse, which was a dish popular with sailors travelling throughout northern Europe. Locals have their own versions of this popular dish, many passed down through generations.

This delectable dish is a hearty stew, made either with lamb or beef, with potatoes, carrots and onions. You will find it served with red cabbage and crusty bread, to soak up all the yummy juice.

Two of the favorite places to sample the stew, are Baltic Fleet and Ship & Mitre.


27 | GET YOUR RETAIL FIX AT LIVERPOOL ONE

Both clubs offer stadium tours of their grounds and trophy rooms, although Liverpool have earned utmost success and the club is famous around the world.
