From Santiago del Teide, the TF-436 road winds dramatically to Tenerife’s northwest gem, the small hamlet of Masca.

The mountain village, while only a cluster of buildings, enjoys an incredibly stunning position, perched on the side of a hill. While now firmly on the tourist map, it’s the journey rather than the destination that’s the huge draw.

While driving in Tenerife is easy, the narrow twisting road is full of hairpin bends. However, the road does offers magnificent views of the Teno Mountains, Masca valley and numerous miradors along the way.

2. STROLL AROUND THE RURAL TOWN OF ARONA

For those looking for quieter places to go in Tenerife south, head inland to the small but atmospheric town of Arona. At the heart of the historic old town is the Plaza del Cristo de la Salud.

This emblematic building has a magnificent balcony made of tea wood, characteristic of the traditional Canarian architecture.

Inside are several departments including City Hall and the Plenary Hall.

  • At the entrance of the Town Hall is a bronze statue of Brother Pedro who was the first saint of the Canary Islands.
  • The Plaza is home to a copperwood tree dating back hundreds of years, reaching a height of about 9m (29ft), which is listed in Tenerife’s book of Monumental Trees. The tree is shown on the municipal coat of arms and is part of its cultural heritage.
  • The 18th-century church of San Antonia Abad is built on the same spot that housed a chapel one hundred years before. Inside the church, is the figure of Cristo de la Salud (the Christ of Health).

However, one of the most famous natural attractions lie a few kilometres south of Mount Teide, across from Ermita de las Nieves, and Parador de Cañadas del Teide, along TF-21.

This stunning landscape is a must-see stop when visiting the island.

The otherworldly rock formations known as Roques de Garcia are certainly a sight to behold. The freakish, twisted lava pinnacles attract nearly 90% of visitors to the park.

These unique rock formations have been created by millions of years of erosion.

The formations are one of the best things to see in Tenerife by car, as you can get a great view from the parking lot. Be warned though, the parking spaces are inadequate and cars often leave their cars in the tour bus spaces.

TOP TIP: Park at the visitor centre and walk back across the road to the start of the trail.

A great scenic 1.5 hour trail circles the rocks and provides views of some fantastic otherworldly formations.

To the left stands Pico Viejo, at an elevation of over 3,000 metres;, with majestic Mount Teide to the right, at 3,712 metres.

In particular, is the unique and bizarre Roque Cinchado, (finger of God), which is eroding faster at the base than at the top. Add to that, the bald plains of the Llano de Ucanca spread out to the west, and you have one of the most unique south Tenerife areas to explore.

The landscape changes constantly as the foot of the volcano is traversed, and you circle around the impressive Montaña Chinyero.

Head inland to the easygoing town of Guimar to view the mysterious Ethnographic Park Pirámides de Güímar. The town, known for its wines and eating houses, is also home to six rectangular pyramid-shaped, terraced structures built from lava stone.

Despite their similarities with ancient Maya architecture, the origin of the pyramids still baffles archaeologists.

Standing as high as 12m (39ft), they have been dated to the 19th century. Within the park, you can explore the pyramid complex, a museum, an auditorium, and large garden areas.

Apart from interesting historical heritage, the town boasts spectacular natural spaces such as the Barranco del Infierno ravine and the Caldera del Rey crater. 

Located in the upper part of Adeje, is the rural hamlet of Taucho, standing at an altitude of nearly 900m. Taucho is a unique example of local architecture that has had to adapt to the steep terrain, in order to plant crops.
