Qatar in the Middle East enjoys a desert climate with scorching hot summer months. The best time to visit the capital Doha, is between November and March when the temperatures are lower, and you can comfortably explore on foot.

Your packing list should include clothing suitable for the climate. While you’re not required to wear Qatar traditional dress, you want to feel comfortable in public, whilst showing respect for the local culture.

QATAR DRESS CODE FOR FOREIGNERS

First things first, there is no strict Qatar dress code on what to wear in Qatar as a visitor. Doha is a melting pot of locals, international workers, and tourists, and the rules regarding clothing in Qatar are relaxed.

That being said, Qatar is a Muslim country, and you are expected to dress conservatively, modestly, and without too much flesh on show.

While locals dress in traditional clothing, tourists are not required to wear similar clothing when visiting the country.

TRADITIONAL CLOTHING IN QATAR FOR MEN

Qatari men wear a long white shirt called a Thobe over loose pants. This covers the whole body from the wrists to the ankles. In addition they wear a headscarf or Ghutra, attached to their head by a Igal, or black rope.

 

QATAR TRADITIONAL CLOTHING FOR WOMEN

The Qatar traditional outfit for local ladies is a long black Abaya and a head covering called a Shayla.


HOW TO DRESS IN QATAR FOR THE WEATHER

The best fabrics to wear in desert climates are light breathable fabrics such as cotton, and linen. Wearing loose-fitting clothing that enables you to feel cool whilst still covering your shoulders, and knees.

Summer months (June to September) have average highs of 43°C (90°F). 
The winter months (November to February) are a wonderful time to explore Doha, Qatar. With average temperatures ranging from 15 °C to 20 °C, you can enjoy the outdoor spaces comfortably.

We visited Doha in February, and found the climate perfect for exploring the city on foot. Whilst the temperatures were in the mid-twenties, we had no problem dressing conservatively.

  • Dress modestly covering shoulders and knees.
  • Avoid tight clingy, and excessively revealing clothing.
  • Cover your head, shoulders, and knees when entering a mosque.

TIPS FOR WHAT TO WEAR IN DOHA

When packing for your trip, you want your clothing to feel cool, comfortable, and modest.

PASHIMA/SHAWL/SCARF: perfect for covering your shoulders, and legs when required, and as a head covering when entering a Mosque. They come in light fabrics, pretty designs, and bright colours.

 

If you forget to pack a scarf, head to Souq Waqif, where you can purchase one. Don’t forget to haggle over the price as this is customary, and great fun.

KIMONOS: a long Kimono keeps you covered yet cool, and can be worn over leggings or trousers, for a casual look. They come in different lengths, and offer a relaxed, loose fit.

 

LINEN TROUSERS: Light, airy 3/4 length linen trousers are breathable, and can be paired with a lightweight top.

CULOTTES: the wide leg design keeps you cool, and comfortable. Whether casual or more structured, they are a great addition to your wardrobe.

LEGGINGS: If you are wearing a tunic or short dress you will feel more comfortable with a pair of leggings underneath.

MAXI DRESSES: A pretty maxi dress with a t-shirt underneath will feel cool, and look stylish. They can take you from daytime to evening when you want a classier look.

 

SKIRTS: Pair a long skirt with a cotton top or blouse. Loose fitting, flowing, and stylish.

TOPS/BLOUSES: Avoid low necklines, showing your cleavage or your midriff. Steer clear of clingy or see-through fabrics. Instead, opt for pretty designs, casual t-shirts, and stylish tops.

CARDIGANS: we recommend you take one warm layer with you as the air conditioning can be scarily cold.

FOOTWEAR: Flipflops and sandals are perfectly fine to wear in public places. Comfort is the key as you will be doing a lot of walking. Save the evenings for a fancier styled sandal.


HOW TO DRESS IN QATAR AS A MAN

Basically, what to wear in Qatar as a man follows the same rules for modesty, and not showing too much flesh.

  • Do not wear sleeveless tank tops, or go topless in public.
  • If you wear shorts make sure they are at least knee-length.

It is perfectly acceptable for men to wear jeans, light cotton trousers, and longer-length shorts in public spaces.

 

Short or long-sleeved shirts, and t-shirts are the norm, with flipflops, trainers, or sandals.

How should you dress in Doha Airport?
There are no strict dress rules within Hamad International Airport, so simply dress modestly, and bring a top as the air conditioning can be cool.
How should you dress on Doha Metro?
When travelling on public transport, again dress modestly, and cover up.
Can you wear shorts in Qatar?
Yes you can, however these should be loose, and below the knee for both men, and women.
Can you wear jeans in Qatar?
Yes it perfectly fine to wear jeans in public places.
What should you wear for a trip into the desert?
If you are going on a desert tour to explore the sand dunes, be sure to wear closed-toe shoes. If it's winter-time, bring a long-sleeved top, as temperatures can drop towards the end of the day.
What can you wear on the beach?
It is illegal to bathe topless. There is a standard of dress on public beaches, so a one-piece, and a sarong might be best. However, on private beaches, and around hotel pools, the dress code is more relaxed, and a bikini is fine.
Is there a dress code at Souq Waqif?
This traditional market is a popular place, and strolling around the warren of alleyways is one of the best things to do in Doha. Dress modestly as in other public places.
