Where to stay in Tenerife depends on what kind of trip you want.

If you want sunshine, beaches, restaurants and easy resort logistics, the south is usually the simplest choice. Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas work well if you want a classic Tenerife holiday with tours, beach time and everything close by.

But if you want to explore Tenerife by car, we would choose your base much more carefully.

We did not enjoy the busiest parts of the south as much as the north. We could see why people choose it for sunshine, beaches and easy logistics, but it also felt more touristy and crowded than the Tenerife we liked most.

For us, the island became much more interesting once we used the car to reach Teide, Anaga, La Laguna, La Orotava, the north coast and the more scenic roads away from the resort areas.

That is where your base starts to matter.

Stay too far south, and Anaga or the north coast can become a long day. Stay too far north, and you may lose the easy sunshine, beaches and airport logistics people often want from Tenerife. Stay in one place, and your trip is simpler. Split your stay, and the route can feel easier if you are planning a proper road trip.

If you want beaches, sunshine, restaurants and easy tours, the south is usually the simplest choice.

For a classic beach holiday, the south is usually easier.

For the kind of Tenerife trip we enjoyed most, we would look north first, especially if you want Anaga, La Laguna, La Orotava and more varied scenery.

If you want both, a split stay can make more sense than trying to use 1 base for everything.

Should You Stay In One Place Or Split Your Stay?

For 3 or 4 nights, 1 base is usually simplest.

You can unpack once, get to know the area and avoid losing time moving hotels.

For 5 to 7 nights, we would consider splitting your stay, especially if you want to include the north, Teide, Masca, Los Gigantes and Tenerife South Airport.

A split stay does not mean moving hotels every night.

For most Tenerife road trips, 2 bases is enough: one for the north and east, then one for Teide, the west coast, the south-west or your final airport night.

If you hate packing and moving, stay in one place. Just be realistic about longer day trips, especially if you are staying in the south but want to spend time in Anaga, La Laguna or the north coast.

If you only have a long weekend, keeping the route tight can work better than moving hotels just for the sake of it.

For a road trip, we would use Costa Adeje as a south coast base, a final stop before flying home, or part of a split stay.

We would not choose it as our only base if your trip is mainly about Anaga, La Laguna, La Orotava or the north coast. It can work, but you may spend more of the day getting across the island than you really want.

Choose Costa Adeje if you want the easiest south coast option, not necessarily the most local-feeling base.

It can work as a south coast base, especially if you want easy access to Tenerife South Airport, Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and the west coast.

But we would not choose it as our only base if your main focus is Anaga, La Laguna, La Orotava, Teide or the north coast.

You can reach those places from the south, but you will spend more time driving back and forth than you might want.

Some bases look fine on a map, but once you have spent the day driving mountain roads, finding viewpoints and dealing with parking, it is nice to come back somewhere with food, a seafront walk and a bit of life nearby.

Puerto de la Cruz is not the sunniest or most resort-polished choice. The north can be cloudier than the south, and if your main dream is reliable pool weather, Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos may suit you better.

But if you want a northern base that gives you easier access to the parts of Tenerife we found more interesting, Puerto de la Cruz makes a lot of sense.

Choose Puerto de la Cruz if you want a practical north Tenerife base with coast, restaurants and easier road trip access to the greener, less resort-heavy side of the island.

If Teide is pulling you towards a northern base, check how much of the national park you can comfortably fit into 1 day.

For a road trip, we would use La Laguna as a base for Anaga, Santa Cruz, the north-east coast and a slower old-town evening.

It is not the place we would choose if your trip is mainly about beach time, pools or sunny resort evenings.

Parking is the detail to check carefully.

La Laguna is lovely once you are walking around, but older streets and town-centre parking can make arrival more annoying if you have not planned ahead. We would choose accommodation with clear parking, or at least know where the nearest public car park is before turning up with luggage.

La Orotava is lovely once you are wandering around on foot, but the steeper streets are worth planning around if you are arriving by car. We would check the exact hotel location, parking options and how easy it is to reach the property before booking.

Choose La Orotava if you want a quieter historic base in Tenerife north, not if you want beaches and resort-style convenience.
