For us, Ålesund worked best as a pretty, walkable overnight stop on our Norway road trip.
We would not plan an entire trip around it, but we would absolutely stop here again if our route passed through the area.
We visited after driving from Eidsdal, taking the short ferry crossing and following the 650 road towards Ålesund.
Before checking in, we made a few easy road-trip stops, including Stordal Church and Alnes Lighthouse, then spent the rest of the day exploring Ålesund on foot.
That was enough time to enjoy the town without rushing.
Once we had parked, we could walk to the harbour, Art Nouveau streets, Molja Lighthouse, cafés, viewpoints and dinner without needing the car again.
Here is how we would make the most of Ålesund on a short road trip stop, including what to prioritise and when to add Alnes Lighthouse.

Best Things To Do In Ålesund On A Short Visit
Walk To Molja Lighthouse
From our hotel, we started by walking past the Fisheries Museum towards the end of the spit.
We did not go inside the museum, but it is worth knowing what is there before you decide whether to add it.
The Fisheries Museum focuses on Ålesund’s fishing history, including coastal and deep-sea fishing, klippfisk, fishing equipment and how the fishing industry helped shape the city.
If you are interested in maritime history, local industry or indoor options on a wet day, it could be worth building into your walk.
If not, you can still enjoy this part of Ålesund from the outside.
The walk out towards Molja Lighthouse gives you harbour views, boats, sea air and a quieter edge of town before you head back towards the busier streets.
Molja Lighthouse itself is small, but it is a worthwhile marker point for a short waterfront walk.
For us, this was a good way to start exploring Ålesund after parking the car. It is exactly the kind of easy town stop that helps when you are working out how to fit smaller Norway stops into your route.
You get a feel for the town’s waterfront setting before crossing back over towards Brunholmen, Hellebroa and the Art Nouveau streets.
Wander Through Ålesund’s Art Nouveau Streets
After walking out towards Molja Lighthouse, we crossed back towards the centre and wandered through Ålesund’s streets.
This is where the town starts to feel different from many other Norway stops.
Ålesund is known for its Art Nouveau architecture, also called Jugendstil. Much of the town was rebuilt in this style after a major fire in 1904, which is why so many of the buildings have decorative fronts, curved lines, towers, turrets and pretty details close together.
You do not need a strict route here, but it helps to slow down and look up.
We wandered through the area around Brunholmen, Hellebroa, Notenesgata and St Olavsplass.
Brunholmen is one of the central harbour areas, so it is a good place to notice the mix of boats, colourful buildings and waterfront views.
Hellebroa is the bridge connecting parts of the town centre, and it gives you an easy crossing point as you move from the harbour side into the streets.
Notenesgata and St Olavsplass are useful places to include if you want to see more of Ålesund’s town-centre architecture rather than only staying on the waterfront.
We also passed Løvenvold Theater and the Jugendstilsenteret, the Art Nouveau Centre.
We did not go inside the Art Nouveau Centre, but it is worth knowing about if you want more background on Ålesund’s architecture and the rebuild after the fire.
For us, the best part was simply wandering without rushing.
Ålesund is not a town where every stop needs to be a big attraction. That is worth remembering when you are choosing the right duration for your Norway plans, because not every stop needs a full day to feel worthwhile.
A lot of the appeal is in the streets themselves: the building fronts, harbour corners, bridges, statues and small details you notice as you walk.
Stop For Coffee And Cake At Racoon Coffee
After wandering through the streets, we stopped for coffee and cake at Racoon Coffee.
This was a useful pause before continuing towards more of the town centre and the climb up to Aksla viewpoint.
Ålesund is compact enough that a café stop does not need to disrupt your route.
You can walk for a while, stop somewhere central, then carry on without needing the car or a new plan.
We would still check opening times before relying on any specific café, especially if you are visiting later in the day or outside the main season.
But for a short visit, building in a coffee stop makes the afternoon feel much more relaxed.
Look For Ålesund’s Small Details And Statues
As the walk continues through the centre, Ålesund’s smaller details start to add more character to the route.
These are not big sights to plan your day around, but they are worth pausing for as you pass.
One of the most interesting is Sildekona, the Herring Woman.
This bronze statue honours the women who worked with herring in Ålesund, which fits the town’s long connection with fishing and maritime trade.
Along the waterfront, you can also find the Harald Grytten statue, also known as The Wanderer.
Harald Grytten was closely associated with Ålesund’s local history and walking routes, so the statue feels very fitting in a town that is best explored on foot.
Another small detail is the Tafjord Kraft varmebenker, the heated benches in Brosundet.
They are easy to miss, but they add a practical, unexpected touch to the waterfront.
This part of Ålesund is not about rushing between major attractions.
It is about slowing down enough to enjoy the statues, benches, bridges and harbour corners that make the town feel more memorable.
Climb The 418 Steps To Aksla Viewpoint
Aksla viewpoint is the one thing we would try not to miss in Ålesund, especially if the weather is clear. If viewpoints and scenic stops are important to your trip, it is worth thinking about when Norway makes the most sense for road trippers before you lock in your dates.
The walk starts from the town park and climbs up 418 steps to the viewpoint above the town.
It is a proper uphill climb, but it is not complicated. You just need decent shoes, a bit of energy and enough time to stop on the way up if you need to.
The reward is the view.
From the top, you can see across Ålesund’s colourful town centre, the harbour, the islands, the water and the mountains beyond.
It gives you a much better sense of why Ålesund is such a scenic stop on this part of the coast.
We walked up, but you do not have to.
When we reached the top, there was a large parking area, so driving up is an option if the steps do not suit you or you are short on time.
For us, the climb was worth it because the view felt like the best way to finish our walk around Ålesund.
If you only have time for one bigger thing in town, we would make it Aksla viewpoint.
Add Alnes Lighthouse As A Nearby Road Trip Detour
Alnes Lighthouse is not in Ålesund town centre, but it worked really well as a nearby road-trip detour for us.
The lighthouse sits by the small fishing village of Alnes on Godøya island, just outside Ålesund.
The drive out there is part of the appeal. The drive is a good example of how easy Norway feels to drive once you understand it, with bridges, tunnels and coastal roads that sound more complicated than they felt.
You leave the town behind and head towards a more open, coastal landscape, with sea views, bridges, tunnels and a very different feel from central Ålesund.
We visited before checking into our hotel, which made sense because we still had the car and could use the day more efficiently.
At Alnes, we visited the lighthouse area, walked down towards the water, and stopped for food in the visitor centre café.
It gave the day a different feel before we arrived in Ålesund itself.
Instead of only seeing the town, we also got a taste of the nearby coastline, with lighthouse scenery, sea air and a quieter village setting.
We also stopped briefly at Sandvika, a beach area near Alnes, before driving back towards Ålesund.
For us, Alnes Lighthouse made most sense before check-in rather than after.
Once we had parked at the hotel, Ålesund was easy to explore on foot, so we did not want to get the car back out again.
If you have half a day in Ålesund, focus on the town and Aksla viewpoint.
If you have closer to a full day, or you are arriving by car before hotel check-in, Alnes Lighthouse is a worthwhile add-on.
Where To Park In Ålesund
Ålesund was easy for us once the car was parked.
We used the underground parking connected with Thon Hotel Ålesund, which cost 250 NOK per day. It is a small but useful reminder of what it costs to keep moving around Norway by car, especially when you are staying in towns.
That worked really well because the hotel was central enough for us to leave the car and explore the town on foot.
For a short stay, we would prioritise accommodation with parking or a nearby garage over trying to save a small amount by staying further out.
Ålesund is walkable once you are in the centre, so the main thing is getting the car settled before you start sightseeing.
We would not want to keep moving the car between individual sights.
It is much easier to park once, walk the town, then only use the car again when you are ready to leave Ålesund or drive out to places such as Alnes Lighthouse.
If you are visiting just for the day, look for central parking that lets you start near the harbour or town centre, then explore on foot from there.
Is Ålesund Worth Staying Overnight?
For us, Ålesund worked well as a 1-night stop.
Staying overnight meant we could arrive, park the car, explore the town on foot, have dinner, and leave the next morning ready for the drive towards Kristiansund.
That felt much easier than trying to squeeze Ålesund, Aksla viewpoint and Alnes Lighthouse into a quick passing visit.
We stayed at Thon Hotel Ålesund and paid £157.37 per room per night, including breakfast. Real accommodation costs like this are useful when you are working out what a first Norway trip might cost you.
The hotel was modern, comfortable and in a lovely position for walking around Ålesund.
We would definitely recommend it and stay there again.
For most road trippers, we think 1 night is enough unless you want to use Ålesund as a base for nearby islands, boat trips or a slower coastal stay.
This is a good example of the best way to structure your nights on the road in Norway, because some stops only need 1 night to work well.
What We Would Do Differently
Honestly, not much.
Ålesund fitted into our route well, and we did not leave feeling as though we had missed something important.
Half a day and an evening gave us enough time for the town centre, Aksla viewpoint, dinner and a relaxed overnight stay.
Adding Alnes Lighthouse before check-in also worked well because we still had the car and had not yet settled into the hotel.
We would keep that order again.
The only thing we would say is to be realistic about what kind of stop Ålesund is.
It is a lovely place to break up a Norway road trip, stretch your legs, enjoy the harbour and see the town from above.
But for us, it was not somewhere we felt we needed several days.
That made 1 night feel like the right amount of time.
